EVERYTHING BUCKWHEAT
Did you know that Buckwheat is not really a ‘wheat’?
It is actually a fruit related to the rhubarb plant. The hull or outer skin of this fruit is used as filling in Buckwheat Pillows. All of the buckwheat hulls used in the pillows at buckwheatpillowsonline.com are American grown and 100% organic. They are fully cleaned (triple cleaning process) to ensure they are free from dust, buckwheat flour, and debris. These hulls are hypo-allergenic which makes them ideal for people allergic to feathers and synthetic materials, like fiberfill or foam.
Why Buckwheat?
In Japan and other Far East countries, when someone wanted a pillow, they went to a pillow maker. The pillow maker knew all the secrets that went into making a buckwheat pillow that makes for a restful, rejuvenating sleep. The therapeutic properties of these pillows have been known for centuries. The buckwheat hulls shift inside the case to match the exact contour of your neck, head and spine instantly, shaping to your every position. This makes it easier for the smaller neck muscles to function properly during sleep. This even support relaxes the muscles, releasing the tension known to contribute to headaches and stress. As an added benefit, your head will be kept cooler as the small hulls allow fresh air to circulate throughout the pillow quickly. These buckwheat pillows are also known to support the back, legs and arms as well.
Sleep – the 8 hour pause that refreshes!
Today’s high stress levels can interfere with one’s sleep. Sleep is the body’s way of correcting any imbalance and rejuvenating itself. This natural cycle can and is often broken, even on a subconscious level. When this happens, one meets the new day with tensions and unrest.
Common sleeping problems such as tension, muscle pain, stiff neck, headache and stress are often relieved with the use of a buckwheat pillow. These malleable pillows are one way to combat these things. The right pillow will pamper your neck and head in just the right ways.
Aromatherapy Sachets/Scents
Dried aromatherapy herbs (lavender and chamomile), when combined with the benefits of buckwheat hulls, produce a calming effect inside the buckwheat pillow. These sachets are shipped separately and can be added to your pillow as you see fit. We recommend placing the entire sachet bag into the pillow. When you are fluffing your pillow or squeezing the sachet, it will release more scent.
- Lavender: Originally found in the Mediterranean countries, it is a perennial herb long prized for its perfume and medicinal qualities. The ancient Romans used it for healing and antiseptic qualities. Its calming effects have been used to treat anxiety, headaches, insomnia, muscle aches and to relieve stress and tension.
- Chamomile: One of the oldest and most favorite of the garden herbs. Ancient Greeks named it “kamai melon” or ground apple, because it was thought to have the aroma of an apple. The Anglo-Saxons believed it was a sacred plant due to its beneficial qualities. It has been to treat insomnia because of its relaxing qualities.
Pillow Preparation
Our pillows are generously filled and may need to be adjusted. For the Standard, Queen and King size, we recommend removing 2 to 3 pounds of hulls (less for smaller sizes) and saving them in a plastic bag that can be sealed. Sleep on your buckwheat pillow. The next morning you will be able to decide whether to remove more hulls or add some back. Personalizing your pillow to suit your individual needs is one of the great advantages of owning one of these great pillows. It is a good idea to save your extra hulls so in the future you may refill a bit if you wish to.
Pillow Maintenance
All of our pillow casings are made with 100% American grown and sewn Cotton, unbleached muslin pillow casing with a smooth nylon zipper. The zipper is essential to the maintenance of your pillow. This allows you the option of removing hulls and adjusting your buckwheat pillow to fit your exact needs. It is a good idea to save your extra hulls so you can refill your pillow a bit if you wish to. To ‘freshen’ your pillow, empty the hulls onto a clean surface and let them sit in direct sunlight, stirring occasionally throughout the day. Never allow the hulls to get wet. While the hulls are sitting in the sun, wash the pillow cover. When the hulls are fresh again, return them to the pillow cover and your buckwheat pillow will be just like new again.
